Membership Details

ABHA Membership:

January 1st - December 31st of each year.

As SABHA is an affiliate of the ABHA it is compulsory that all competitors must have current ABHA membership to compete, this includes any persons who needs to assist a rider in the arena.

Note:

  • No persons can ride or mount any horses/ponies at a SABHA ABHA affiliated event (in or out of the arena) unless they hold a current ABHA membership.  (non-rider membership accepted)
  • All persons assisting riders in the arena must have current ABHA membership & must follow relevant ABHA rules.

  • All competitors & persons assisting riders in the arena must follow ABHA dress codes.
  • If a person does not hold a current ABHA membership they will be asked to dismount from the horse/pony immediately. Failure to comply or abusing officials can result in persons being removed from the facility.

  • All ABHA rider documentation for South Australia must be signed and approved by the ABHA before membership is acknowledged.
  • You're able to purchase up to 3 x day memberships before you're required to purchase an ABHA Annual Membership.

Please note: ABHA Memberships do not provide ambulance cover.

SABHA Membership:

July 1st - June 30th of each year

SABHA membership is not compulsory to be able to compete at ABHA affiliated run events. Any SABHA coordinated events will require day or club membership. SABHA members accrue points* to be in the running for end of year prizes and awards. Membership also gives persons over 18 yrs the right to vote at SABHA's Annual General Meetings and Special General Meetings if required.


(*Note: SABHA Points for end of year awards start accruing from the date payment and membership paperwork are received by SABHA and will not be back dated - competitors must attend at least 50% of competitions to be eligible (as per SABHA rules) to be eligible for end of year prizes.

SABHA Entry Fees

  • Open Divisional : are not restricted in any manner and must be open to any rider and horse combination.


  • Junior Divisional : is open to ANY Junior competitor under 18 years in accordance with the ABHA guidelines (cannot have an assistant in the arena). Once a competitor turns 18 years of age they must move up to Open Division immediately, regardless of the season status. Competitors must wear a current Australian Standard helmet whilst riding/mounted on a horse.


  • Dave Waters Memorial: This was created in honor of a man (Dave Waters) who spent a lot of time and effort not only competing within our club but as a committee member for a number of years. It was established to encourage people new to the sport, still gaining their confidence or for those who wish to compete without the pressure of competing in any divisional events. Once a person enters any divisional/competitive ABHA barrel racing events, they are no longer eligible to compete in the Dave Waters Memorial Barrel Race. If a competitor consistently, completes a time that is 23 seconds or faster, that competitor is no longer eligible to enter this event for the remainder of the season and are to move up to a divisional event (Junior or Open Divisional). Accrued points are not transferable to the next division. 
    All profits are donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Gawler.


  • Tiny Tots: open to led rider 7 years (assistant must be over 18yrs & an ABHA member) and under as of the 1st July each calendar year. This is a non-competitive event and no prize monies or points are accrued by the riders. Riders MUST be able to sit on a horse/pony independently without being supported/held by person leading pony/horse who must be at the shoulder of the horse whilst completing the pattern. Participants can share a horse/pony at this level. Competitors must wear a current Australian Standard helmet whilst riding/mounted on a horse.


  • Junior Assisted: open to any rider/horse combination requiring assistance between ages 7 and 12 years as of the 1st July each calendar year. This rider can be either led or supported in arena by an ABHA member over 18 years of age. There are prize monies and placings in this event, it is a non-divisional event. Competitors must wear a current Australian Standard helmet whilst riding/mounted on a horse.


  • Open, Junior Division & Dave Waters Barrel races are 2 runs with option of 1 run events, nominated at time of entry. All other events are 1 run only.


  • Addback - a proportion of all divisional and junior assisted event entry fees are pooled to prize money as per ABHA rules. The amount paid to Addback are advertised on the entry forms.


  • Pole Bending: is a timed event where a rider must complete a pole pattern (as per ABHA rules). Open, Junior and Jnr Assisted Pole bending are competitive events.


  • Exhibition Runs: Are a pre event, non competitive run that is limited to 1 minute per nominated exhibition run.  You can nominate more than one exhibition run that can be put together or split up. Used for training new/young horses or exposure to arena for horse and rider etc.


  • Hat Fine: If you lose your hat in the arena when competing, a $5 fine will be applied. This does not apply to exhibitions. Make sure you have $5 in your pocket at the start of the day or an invoice will be sent!! All hat fines are considered fundraising and the total received will be donated to a charity at the end of the season.

ENTRIES

PRE-entries are required at all of our events – Entries will close the a week before the event date (date specified on Event notification – please check date and time on event flyer or ABHA website.

  • No late entries
  • No entries on the day
  • Payment of entries must be received before closing date to be accepted.
  • Current ABHA membership compulsory for entry.
